And the sun will shine again.
I think that one of my biggest comforts in life is the notion that hardly any emotion we ever experience is original.
I’ll watch a relatable reel about college life, and laugh to myself about how strangers on the internet are able to articulate exactly what I’m feeling. I’ll have a conversation with an older student, and listen as they recall experiencing the same things at my age. It’s moments like these when I’m reminded that we are never truly alone with what we’re going through — because there will almost always be someone who has gone through the same thing.
And I take solace in the fact that all of these people have come out of the other side. Whether it’s a test that I’m struggling to study for, friendships that I fail to make, or even a dim period of life where it seems like the clouds will never disappear, I ground myself with the knowledge that so many people have overcome those exact moments.
There is, in fact, strength in numbers — even if those numbers consist of countless strangers from all over the world. Knowing that our diverse life experiences and vastly different choices have led us to encounter similar struggles always seems to remove the gravity from the situations I’m facing. Because it is rarely ever that serious. And the world is still spinning.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that although it’s easy to feel alone in this world, it is important to remember that millions of people have also felt alone. We are all experiencing life for the first time — and we find ourselves undergoing similar emotions in the process.
For every dark day you’ve had, the chances that someone else has had a day just like that are extremely high. And they were able to make it through. Therefore, so will you.
It’s an interesting thing to think about. For all of our differences, at the end of the day we really are all the same, aren’t we?
